SIAL Paris 2026: A Frozen Produce Buyer’s Playbook

Five days, ten sectors, and close to 8,000 exhibitors. When SIAL Paris opens its doors at Paris Nord Villepinte on October 17, it will be the largest food trade event of 2026 — organizers expect some 295,000 professionals, and the fruit and vegetable sectors are already close to capacity, with frozen products seeing strong demand. For frozen produce buyers, this is the one week when the industry’s entire supply side is in a single place. Here is how to make it count.

Book meetings before you fly

SIAL has upgraded its online catalog and matchmaking service for 2026, and this is the single highest-leverage thing a buyer can do. Walking the halls cold burns hours; arriving with a pre-booked schedule of 15-minute supplier meetings turns the show into a sourcing sprint. Shortlist IQF vegetable and fruit suppliers in advance, and send each one the same two questions ahead of time: which certifications do you hold, and can you share a recent third-party lab report? The answers you get — or don’t get — before the show tell you more than any booth display.

Walk the SIAL Innovation area first

2026 marks the 30th anniversary of SIAL Innovation, and the area has been completely redesigned with a new tasting space and live pitch stage. For frozen buyers, this is where to spot where the category is heading: functional frozen blends, clean-label reformulations, and portion formats built for foodservice. You don’t need to buy innovation on the spot — but you do need to know what your competitors will be launching with next year.

Ask about residue testing, not just prices

With the EU moving toward near-zero residue limits on imported food for EU-banned pesticides, compliance is becoming a price factor. A supplier who tests every lot and can show you current certificates of analysis is worth more than one who quotes a few cents lower and shrugs at the question. Ask specifically: which active substances do you screen for, and what is your limit of quantification? Put the answer next to the price in your comparison sheet.

Compare IQF specs side by side

Frozen produce looks identical in a booth freezer. What differs is what you can’t see: glaze percentage, Brix levels in fruit, blanching control in vegetables, and cold-chain discipline from factory gate to port. Bring a one-page spec template and make every supplier fill in the same fields. By day three, patterns emerge — and the serious suppliers are the ones who answer without hesitation.

Lock in the calendar, not just the container

October is when serious buyers secure Q1 supply. Use the show to agree on 2027 program business — monthly volumes, price review triggers, and contingency plans for weather-driven shortages — rather than haggling over a single spot container. The suppliers worth keeping are the ones who talk about year-round availability before you ask.
